About Us
The Leicester Sabres are the University of Leicester Students’ Union‘s Game Society, and we play any and every game we can get our hands on. We have regular meetings and we also bring you a varied social calendar! We were the proud recipients of three awards at the last Students’ Union awards ceremony, and we are one of the most active and engaging societies at the University of Leicester!
We play a lot of games, including roleplaying games, collectible card games, wargames and boardgames. We meet on Mondays and Wednesdays and have a variety of games running at any point, including a variety of ongoing roleplay campaigns run by Dungeon Masters from across the society and a cornucopia of events organised by our Wargames Rep and our Magic Rep. We play games from the greats (Dungeons and Dragons and Warhammer 40,000) to the some lesser-known stuff (6d6 and Dystopian Wars), and anything in between!
As well as our gaming, we have strong links to gamers in Leicester. The best example of this is Gifts for Geeks and their shop, Tabletop Tyrant. Sabres members receive a discount at Tabletop Tyrant when they show their membership card on payment, and a fair few of us play there on Tuesday and Wednesday nights if we fancy a change of terrain!
Running parallel to the games and the regular meetings is our action-packed social calendar. The first term usually sees the freshers’ bar crawl and the Hallowe’en bar crawl (with some awesome costuming and fancy dress!), in addition to events such as the Geek Quiz and Geek Ball that are open to other societies. In previous years we have invited members of Rocksoc, the Vikings, LUSFAF, LANMA and Compsoc in order to bring you bigger and better socials! And that isn’t even including the twenty-four hour charity fundraising social, which raises money for various worthy causes (typically local to our city).
What do we do other than playing games and having an awesome time? Well, we arrange and attend nationwide events. The SU award-winning Sabrecon is our one-day gaming convention, which is being run for a second consecutive year in March, and will be an epic, epic day. Last year we had tournaments, roleplaying games, talks from various guests (including Graham Davey and his unique perspective on Games Workshop) and alcohol! We also attend the Student National Roleplaying and Wargaming Championships, and we have placed third for the last three years running.
If you’re interested in finding out more about us, please feel free to pop along to a meeting and introduce yourself. We are running introductory meetings in October for freshers at the university, so that’d be an ideal time to dip a toe in the water. In the meantime, feel free to browse our website and get to know us via the links on the right!
