Socials
The Leicester Sabres have a very active social calendar, but what really sets us apart is the amount of variety in what we do. We arrange the more traditional socials on a regular basis, and our bar crawls are always great fun and very well-received. However, in the last three years we have also done socials such as ten-pin bowling, paintballing, film nights in the university’s film theatre, joint socials, twenty-four hour gaming events for charity, the Geek Quiz and the Geek Ball, as well as Sabrecon and trips to other national events.
Sabrecon is the Sabres’ nationwide and award-winning event, running for the second time in 2012! If you feel like coming along (or even volunteering!), please feel free to visit the Sabrecon page or join our Facebook group and find out more about the event.
Other annual events that we hold are a little closer to home, in the form of the Geek Quiz and Geek Ball. The Geek Quiz is held in the first term, and consists of an evening of geeky quiz questions to determine who is King Geek. Dan has held the crown for as long as any member can remember, will you be the one to subdue him? Then there’s also the charity fundraiser, typically in the second term, which involves playing boardgames solidly from noon until noon. We usually raise a lot of money for our chosen charity and have a lot of fun, to boot! Finally, the Geek Ball is held after exams every year and is the best night out you will ever have. The most recent Ball was held at a pub in the city centre and featured cakes in the shape of R2-D2 and the Millennium Falcon, as well as a DJ that played some of the geekiest tunes you have ever danced to!
In terms of more regular events, we arrange a variety bar crawls we arrange are many and varied, and usually kick off in October, whether it’s with a bar crawl aimed at freshers or the traditional fancy dress Hallowe’en bar crawl. There is usually a prize on offer for the best costume and people always surpass our expectations by coming in ever more weird and wonderful disguises! Ten-pin bowling, paintballing and laserquest help give a flavour for the events we arrange that don’t necessarily involve alcohol – although these events change depending on the social secretary, there’s usually something for everyone.
