Annual Geek Ball a huge success

The 5th annual Geek Ball was held on Saturday 11th June 2011, at the Globe in Leicester city centre, and judged to be a huge success. Around sixty people were there, comprised of members from a variety of societies. Unfortunately, a majority of the Vikings were unable to attend this year due to a clash with a big event in Ely. Although they were sorely missed, our numbers held steady, so hopefully next year’s ball will be even bigger than ever upon their return!

The Leicester Sabres’ Geek Ball is an annual event that has been run since 2007, and was a tradition initiated by Nicola, who is also responsible for Sabrecon. The Geek Ball is not just for the Sabres, though, and we always invite an assortment of other geeks. Usually, this comprises Rocksoc, LUSFAF, LANMA, CompSoc and the Vikings, but we are not above adding new societies into the mix if they’re fit (geeky enough!) to attend.

The 2011 President's Speech.

As well as being a fixture of the Sabres’ social calendar and a huge event that’s often fondly remembered, the Geek Ball also marks the point at which the outgoing Council hands over the reigns to the incoming Council. This has lead to the tradition of the President’s Speech. Introduced (typically, by the Social Secretary), the President says a few words about the previous year and gives his gratitude to a select group of people, before getting to choose the next song, which can vary from the geeky (various television themes) to the classic (The Who).

The Geek Ball is usually held on the first weekend after the end of the examination period, in the third term. For more details about the event, please contact the Social Secretary.
